Keynote - Christene Whelan Ph.D: “Resilience and Purpose for the Journey Ahead: WTF Do We Do from Here?”
The last few years have been… a lot. When saccharine self-care advice doesn’t cut it, it’s time to get real and ask WTF happened, and were do we go from here? Dr. Christine B. Whelan offers sassy, truth-telling and research-based guidance for how to embrace the journey ahead with purpose, resilience … and sometimes a judiciously used obscenity when life doesn’t go according to plan. Dr. Whelan, a clinical professor in the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, has studied the self-improvement industry for nearly two decades. Your real-talk roadmap to the good life begins here!

The challenges we face in society are too vast and complex for any one person or organization to address alone. It is time to break down the silos and work across sectors, perspectives, and communities, knowing that we are strongest when we work together. It is Okay to Feel How You Feel: A Discussion on How to Approach Emotions With Children
As times change and parents begin to reflect on their childhood, many have come to realize that they were not able to express their emotions. They were often taught to suppress their feelings and even as adults, they find it difficult to fully recognize and express how they are feeling. Many of these parents want different for their children and are looking for effective and practical ways to help begin conversations around emotions with their children. They want to foster a more open emotional environment with their children.

I have written a book, “It is Okay to Feel How You Feel”, that will help parents and adults who work with and are around children do just that. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is start the conversation. I have enlisted the assistance of Tessa Thompson, Clinical Therapist, APSW, SAC-IT to talk about effective ways to incorporate this book into the emotional learning process.

We will facilitate a guided discussion on ways to incorporate, “It is Okay to Feel How You Feel” into shaping children’s emotional intelligence as well as ways to begin conversations about emotions. We will then open the conversation to members in the audience to answer any questions they may have.

Intentional Use of Language for Family Success
Our session discusses making intentional word choices to increase Kindergarten readiness skills for families. Head Start comes with jargon that doesn't match local schools. For example, we can shift our messaging from 'arriving late' to focus on timely arrival as a kindergarten readiness skill. We will discuss how to align our practices, timelines, and word choices with local school districts to increase success and decrease confusion for parents when transitioning into K-12.
